PCV Oil Catch Can
« on: April 09, 2009, 06:05:45 pm »
recently i've noticed oil in my air intake, also the pcv filter keeps getting blown right out of its holder with oil stains on it.
I've been seeing some stuff on about oil catch cans that you install between the pcv and the intake, fill will steel wool to filter and away you go, i heard that the oil fouls your the combustion process somewhat.
you guys know more about this? this could explain some things with my truck...

Cowman, Unfortunately is sounds like your engine has allot of blow-by & your likely going to need to do some repairs. Do you have the proper PCV system in place & do the valve covers have the baffles in them? How much oil are you going through? Lorne

i'm not going through any oil really, not enough to register and there is no spot underneath my beast. the heads were redone a few years back and there are only 153k on the truck if that helps at all.

its just a film or a few spots inside the air cleaner housing, along with the small filter being blown out of the little shelf.

as far as i know the system is correct, but i didnt check cause i also dont know what i'm looking for lol.

I dont know if the valve covers have baffles in them, never taken them off, only the air cleaner housing and some vac lines.

Check you PCV valve and make sure its working properly. The filter should not be popping out. It should be clipped in good. If the filter element itself is coming out, then it may need to be replace. It should not come out that easy. If its the whole cartidge, do you hace the c clip installed that holds it in the air cleaner. Its not uncommon to have some oil in the aircleaner, especially with that kind of mileage, but the filter should not be coming out.

i just bought a new filter, thats why i was choked when i saw it all stained, the holder is c clipped in still and everything seems to be in order.
It appears that when i drive it just simply blows the filter out of the holder (i double checked the size of filter when bought and it fits nicely), i guess i will design a small catch for the top of the holder so that it cant just pop out.

but with the little bit of oil coming up would it be worth it in the long run to install the catch can? or is only used for engines pulling up lots of oil?

Honestly, I have never seen the catch can, so I dont know. The catch to hold the filter in is a good idea, but if you have that much pressure blowing it out, there is a more critical problem here. Did you check the PCV valve. If its not working, then that would explain the excessive pressure through the filter.

so i just pull it out when its running and see if there is much of a difference right?

Make sure there is vacuum at the PCV valve. The PCV valve is designed to flow low at high vacuum(idle), give maximum flow at cruise and shut in the event of a backfire. The breather is venting the crankcase. If oil is backing up into the breather either your pcv system isn't working correctly or you have blow by like everyone else said. A pcv valve is $5 bucks and worth replacing. Usually they clog or the spring fails.

PVC hose should connect to the base of the carb or the intake, the PVC itself goes into the left valve cover (because of engine rotation) and the vent and screen/foam deal goes on the right side engine  VC and the air cleaner.

Joe, Can you explain this? Not something I've ever heard, read & can think what the relevance is. Thanks, Lorne
