How to identify Long or Short water pump?

Is there a way to identify or measure a water pump to tell if it's the long or short water pump?

 ???

There's a complete bracket set-up for a big block chevy on eBay that I want to bid on but it's for the long water pump option.  Motor is a stock 454 out of a 1986 2-wheel drive Suburban.

If you can stick your hand between the pump and the timing chain cover its long if you cant its short.
Thats my method others might have another idea.

I think you can put the short or long on as long as you compensate at the fan.

Here's what it looks like,

The eBay auction is almost up, think I'm going to bid on these brackets.  Not sure if these are priced at fair market value though.  Any ideas?  I don't want to use the serpentine system no matter how great it might be, I want to keep my engine simple.

Just realized the auction says,

a 1971-79 Big Block Chevy Engine

I have a 1986 era Mark IV 454

Guest this means these brackets won't fit the block?

My mechanic friend in Oregon says the brackets should all work fine on my block.  Said I'll have to get a different water pump because of the way the serpentine pump was designed to rotate.

You would have to get a new pump if you are eliminating serpentine.  I would use serpenting over these.  I have V-belts on mine and would switch in a heartbeat.

I appreciate your advice and respect it too, but I am really big into keeping my engine compartment Simple Simon and traditional v-belt system is a better option for my preferences.
