« on: April 17, 2009, 11:27:39 am »
trying to understand my 87 305 2WD with FI a little better.

was this the first year for FI?
if so is it better or worse than a standard carb.
any issues i need to be aware of. i like to keep things as simple as possible.

thanks

1987 was the first year for the 73-87 Trucks.

You are going to get different opinions on the comparison to a Carb.
My opinion, TBI is MUCH better than a Carb for a driver.

You really can't get any simpler than a TBI, unlike a carb the ECM does all of the adjustments, you just drive it.

TBI is a much better daily driver. I have an 87 myself and the biggest selling point was because of the TBI. I had lots or carbureted trucks. They were a pain to use in cold weather, and just didn't seem as efficient.

I think it is easier to build a high performance carbureted engine than a tbi though.

I have some basic bolt ons, still have to re-chip the computer, but if you want to get serious with high performance and TBI, you better have a good tuner.

TBI also seems to give the engine good torque vs a stock carbureted engine.

Torque isn't developed thru the throttle body. You may be feeling better response thru the accelerator pedal. Actually, my 87 isn't a torquy monster at all- weak cam, low rear end ratio, among other things. :-X

TBI blows away carburetors unless you are building a street rod or race car/truck.

Advice: find a scan tool on ebay or check this out http://winaldl.joby.se/

Anything can give you a problem. We spend our lives solving problems though don't we?
