brake booster
« on: April 23, 2009, 01:06:43 pm »
while looking over something for bleeding the brakes, i see there are two different boosters on these trucks and didn't really see how to determine which you have.  there was a regular, i assume and a "hydro-booster".  i have an 85 with power brakes.

there is a regular and dual diaphram (HD version)
Hydroboost has no booster.
We need a tech page on boosters :)

Hydroboost uses to the power steering pump to provide boost, if you had it there would be three lines (two high pressure, one return) running from the PS pump to your booster behind the master cylinder.  It looks nothing like a diaphram booster, which uses engine vacuum.  I am running an aftermarket hydroboost kit.  Here's a pic.

So, to be clear, if you don't have hydroboost, you have the classic two lines coming from the power steering pump?

I went to buy a new power steering pump and reservoir the other day and they asked if I had hydroboost or not.  Had not a clue.  Haha

You're more than welcome to.  I'm sure it would save people from threads like these.  lol However, I, like the original poster, just want to know how to tell whether I have power steering with hydroboost or not.   :P

Two lines = no hydroboost.
Three lines = hydroboost.

Right?

Thanks

Hydroboost will have lines coming from the power steering pump, like the one pictured above.
Power brakes have a large vacuum line coming from the back of the intake, or back base of the carb. area.
Non power brakes are just a master cylinder right off the fire wall.
All diesels trucks have hydroboost. All 1 tons diesel and gas have hydroboost.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
