transmission tail shaft?
« on: April 23, 2009, 02:47:43 pm »
i have an 86 short box getting a 700r4 trans implant, with no other transmission to take parts from. i will have to go to a wrecker, but i got a built up 700 for 400hp and need to know what size tailshaft i can get, (if there is diff sizes)and what a good donor vehicle would be, as i am certain finding a shortbox for a donor would be tough. will a 700r4 on a regular box work, or one from a suburban of the same vintages work? it is a 2x4 that i'm building. thanks

Tailshaft as in Yoke, you can get one from any SWB or LWB truck that had a 700R4.

I'm not following you. Is this a 4x4 trans you are using for a 2WD?

Length of the bed has nothing to do with transmission length. I might be incorrect but I believe 700R4's are 28 spline output shafts.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

ok, if the length of the yoke part, at the end with the speedo gear in it was the part i was talking about. it is a 2x4 truck the trans i ordered from a shop. but i think its ok now. i called them back, and they are getting me the part i need along with the proper gears to calibrate the speedo. crisis overted! lol

FYI: 700R4 should be 27 spline OR 30 spline.
