how to lift an engine HELP!

Hello! i am doing my first swap, and i was wanting to know what were you guys using to pull the motor up i have a 4,000 lb engine hoist i just dont know where to hook it or where to bolt it up. I have seen a plate that fits the 4 bbl carb spot but i was wanting to know if it were a easier way to lift it is a 350 with the tranny still attached.  THANKS and sorry for the noob ?

It doesn't get any easier than an intake plate. Most times you bolt a chain the the accessory bolt holes in the heads, unless there are tangs bolted down under the intake RH rear & LH front coner to hook or bolt a chain to?

Here's my little hoist


And Here's How I attached it to my 305


If those Lifting Tabs Arent there (they came there from the factory) I have bolted the chain in the ends of the heads.

Never really liked the idea of using the carb bolts to lift engine and trans. Never did the calculations, but lifting 700lbs on 4 5/16 course thread bolts makes me uneasy even with an iron intake.

I just use a good chain and the accessory holes on the heads.

i'm with ccz on that one-----i'm queesy about using the intake plate---it seems like the threads will strip.  But it seems to work, i guess.
i've had good results using the accesory holes on the heads.

2) i would add that if you use a tilter mechanism, like the one 78 posted, it helps to oil the threaded part before you use it.  The tilter mechanism is real helpful.  And really, if you are doing the engine and trans together, and you didn't take the front clip and radiator off, then the tilter mechanism is virtually manditory.

The tiller lift is awesome. I too was leary about using the adapter plate to the carb flange, but have learned it works really well. I have swung fully dressed bigblocks with trannies without any problems, but its harder to get it level or make any adjustments unless you have something like the tiller. I prefer to remove the tranny first anyway.
