I just tried vinegar to lift some rust out of an old tailgate I have and can't believe how good it worked! I had to keep it wet and wiped it for about a 1/2 hour and it totally took out all of the surface rust after sanding in the rust pits and crevices.

you better corner the market on vinegar for both of your projects lol... j/k... Cool to hear vinegar is good for something else besides on french fries and salads...

I read an article in Car Craft where they tried out different rust dissolvers.  One of those was vinegar and it turned out to work really well.

Very interesting. Acetic acid is your friend! lol  Also excellent on removing hard water spots.

Take a pack of Grape Cool Aid and mix about 2 tb spoons of water with it and it will eat rust off also, it works great and smells better than vinegar.
