5 lug to 6 lug wheels changeover..??
« on: May 10, 2009, 03:22:24 pm »
Hi, im new here and wondering if anyone has changed their 81-87 c-10's over to 6 lug wheels to use the new Chevy 20" wheels? I have a 1984 C-10 with the 5 X 5 pattern, i think, but not sure it would only be a matter of changing back axles and drums, and on front maybe changing rotors off of a 99 or newer pickup onto the '84 spindles,if rotors are same size...?
Anyone done this or is there an easier way? i dont like the looks of the aftermarket wheels and want to stay with the Silverado wheels, i think it would look good on the ol' Chevy.
This is a 2 wheel drive,not 4 wheel drive.

Imnot sure how you would do it unless you use adapters. You may be able to change the rear axle, but the front suspension is different. Just the wheel bearing hub is about $500 ea and is non servicable, only replacable. ( I have replaced them before) Im not sure if the spindles on the newer truck will even work with the a-arms on the older truck. Adapters wouldnt be too bad because they will help the offset on the new rims so the tires may fit the wheel openings better. ???

Your best bet is wheel adapters

Check this truck out, It looks AWESOME with the NBS chevy wheels, I think it has 2 inch spacers/adapters.

If the offset of the GM 20" wheels allow you to run them without an adapter then you can change the axles in the back to the 4X4 ones for the 6 lug and have a set of front rotors redrilled in the 6 lug pattern.  Just remember that you would end up with really expensive rotors that would require the redrill anytime they are replace, so you would have to stay up on pad wear so not to score the rotors.

You can get the 67-72 Brake rotors from CPP if you are so dead set on converting.

i have a 63 that i changed from 6 lug to 5 lug using 76 spindals and i changed the rear axes form a 76 allso

classic performance parts (cpp) sells 6 lug rotors that fit the 73 to 87 spindals for the front
and for the rear you could get 4x4 axles and drums for a bolt on swap

79 and older will have a 12 bolt rear and 80 and up will have a 10 bolt rear
