4 Speed Burb??

While searching Craigslist yesterday I came across an 85 Burb for $500 with blown head gaskets, no problem, gives me an exuse to play with the new/old Snap-on torque wrench my grandfather gave me. I called the guy up so I could go and look at it, he's out of town untill next week. I asked him a few questions about it, standard stuff, how rotted out is it? (Solid) Barndoors or Tailgate (Doors). I asked what Tranny it was and he said he wasn't sure the model but it was a 4 speed and a 208 T case... so a 4 Speed Burb? Anyone have one? I'd always thought the burbs were 350's or 400's, never heard of what I am guessing is the SM465... and is the 208 right? Wouldn't it orginally be a 205? I'm confused...

I have seen a 4 speed granny tranny in a Suburban personally. I can't remember the year but I do remember seeing the sticker in the glove box and it was factory installed.

I thought about the 700R4 Vile, but he said it was a stick shift, I can't wait to check this thing out, if nothin else I'll pirate all the stick shift parts for my 79 and throw the 700R4 left over from my still missing bodydropped 87 into the burb... I'll get some pics up next week when the guy gets back.

Let us know if it's a conversion or if it's factory

I forgot all about that thing. The dude sold it to his neighbor the day he came back for half of what he had it on c-list for.

I own a '73 Chevy 'burban and it has a 4-speed. The SM465 is a Muncie tranny with a 6.5 to 1 "granny" 1st gear. This tranny has been touted as being one of the toughest made and is easily rebuildable, and yes they came from the factory installed in suburbans.

Yep, just watched an '85 3/4 ton burb w/45k original miles, with a 4spd go for $2500 here in Tx. I was kinda sick about it since I'd just bought mine for a project vehicle, and it's got a th400 in it. Mine was MUCH cheaper, but with the mileage that other one had, I'd have gladly paid the higher price. I'm pretty sure the 4spd burb had a 208 in it too. And that's what mine has in it.

There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

Yep they are out there. My folks have owned a 68, 83, and a 90 suburban that all were 4x4s and had sm465 transmissions. They still have the older two. All were coincindentally 1/2 tons with 350s and various xfer cAses depending on year. Great vehicles.
