What's an RPO code?
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:09:06 pm »
I can gather that an RPO code is some kind listing for a vehicle's equipment, or way to identify what it originally had. Maybe i should have titled the thread "Where are the RPO codes" cause i want to know if that sticker that is in the glove box is them. There is a white sticker on the backside of my glovebox door that has a sticker that i really cant read due to it's age. However, i can barely make out things that look kinda like these little things here...

Got those off another website, but i just wanted to confirm that is what that sticker is all about. If so i may end up finding a way to copy it and reprint another one to replace the very old and faded original.

Come to think of it... wasn't there some service, or website or something like that, that would remake all your factory stickers for you? I seem to remember some thing like that...

Skunk,  I saw a site just the other day but they only did 72 and older.  But I am sure they may be able to get one for our trucks if you want.

The only thing is they say they will put whatever options you want on it.  That is shady to me.

I saw some labels on one of the parts sites, can't remember which,  , jegs, northern, etc. and they had a blank rpo label you could get, then you could either recreate yours using a typewriter or get a professional printer to print over it for you.

Ok here are my RPO codes. The only thing i really want to know from them is what rear end gear ratio i have. That, and what a TH-400 transmission is. Is this somehow similar to a 700R4? Cause i have the TH-400.

Your truck has a 2.73 ratio from the RPO GU2.
TH400 is the Heavy Duty 3 speed transmission.  It is not like a 700R4 at all.  A 700R4 is essentially a TH350 with overdrive (over simplifiying)
The TH400 is a 4L80E without overdrive.

Here are rear differential codes for the other gears:
GU2   2.73   Rear
GU4   3.08   Rear
GU5   3.23   Rear
GU6   3.42   Rear
GT4   3.73   Rear
GT5   4.10   Rear
HC4   4.56   Rear

Dang. Highway gears.

I want to know about the RPO code P11.The "glide out spare tire carrier" sounds like it would be nice to have. Anyone here got any pics of one? Maybe i can get one in a junkyard somewhere and put it on my truck. As of right now, i just dont have a spare tire at all.

your truck is a little older than how long you have had it so things could of been changed multiple times. dont know what a glide out spare tire is but when did they put the tires in the beds on the drivers side?

Well what exactly is it? Just one of those little spare tire holders that goes up under the bed? Only instead of dropping the tire on your face, you lower it down using the tire iron as a handle, right? If this is the case then they are not very rare around here, my grandfather just bought two from a local junkyard to go on a couple of his trailers. But maybe i am thinking of something different. The words "glide out" would seem so indicate an even easier method of retrieving the spare tire.

The glide out carrier?  It isn't rare, it is fairly common.  I don't have a pic handy of a real one, but here it is in the brochures:

How does that thing work? The words are too small for me to read. It looks like you just sorta unbolt it, but then it would just bang down on the ground or something. Anyone here ever used one before?

Um, Those carriers were under pretty much every one of these trucks from the factory. And in pretty much every make/model pickup truck made up until 2000-ish when they started using the winch-style carriers. If your truck doesn't have it, somebody probably already took it out..

I don't know how appropriate the word "Glide" is... Removal of the tire isn't exactly a graceful process. But, nonetheless, it can be done by simply removing one very long eye-bolt and lowering the carrier..
