Hood flutter
« on: May 28, 2009, 06:40:16 pm »
Hi i was wondering if anyone knows about how to put a stop to hood flutter. When i get up past about 40MPH, my hood wiggles and jiggles up and down. It kinda freaks me out like the hood is going to pop open while i am driving. I know this can happen if a vehicle has been wrecked but i still have the carfax report that i got when i bought this thing. According to the report it has never been wrecked. Now i know that dont always mean nothing has ever happened, but it could be a good indicator that it the truck has never been in an accident. Especially since i have seen a couple other members here asking how they can get rid of it on their late model as well. My truck is a 1987. I even saw one guy here say something like "Oh great now i will have to put up with hood flutter, now that i have to switch to an 87 hood...". This would indicate a common problem. Anyone heard of this, or know what i could do to stop it?

Actually the older hoods shook worse. Check your latch and striker, make sure it's tight. Check the hinges and supports and make sure they're tight. If there is excessive movement in the hinges or supports replace them. Finally make sure your bump stops are properly adjusted. Is your cowl seal in tact?

If the hood was ever replaced with an aftermarket cheapie earlier in its life???  Neither my 85 or 86 have that issue.

Not to my knowledge. I will check the stuff that vile said. Once i called the people that owned it before me. It was some old man that died, then his son and law had it. Then me. I think i may be the third owner. Or at least i hope. Anyway, they were all older people and the hood still looks like a stock one.

Does it shake just out in the center or along the edges too?  If it's around the edges it's not adjusted right.  My old 87 didn't have that problem.  My 78 does but not around the edges, only right out in the center.

Well i checked out the adjusters, and they were pretty far off. I can say that it has lessened now, but it is still there to some small degree. Although i am sure it is a problem that can be fixed. Maybe some metal shims in the right spots.

my 84 hood "flutters" but its cause the top sheet has come unglued, in some spots, from the structural sheet.

The hoods outer skin and inner frame are attached with some kind of adhesive.  Might ask some of these body guys what that stuff is, I can't remember what it's called.  When you apply it, follow the instructions to a tee and don't screw it up right after you apply it by slamming the hood shut, which will squish a lot of it out.  Just shut it gently to the first click until the next day.

My hood flutters slightly at about 60+.  Never wrecked, hinges and latches tight, stops adjusted, outer skin still attched to inner structure.  It's never flopped open on the freeway, so I just don't let it bother me.  But I see why hood pins became so popular on muscle cars.  If I ever took my truck into the triple digits, I'd certainly want them. :P

Now that might be a good answer to the problem. A good set of hood pins. However, i have never liked the way they look. But then again, i seem to remember seeing some that really blend in, or are invisible from the outside. So that would probly be the best option here. I mean when you think about it, that is one big, un-areodynamic hood we got on these old trucks. And im sure the air gets up under it, by way of the grill. That would probly explain why the faster you go, the worse it gets.

I can do 100 on the highway in my 85 K20 without the stock hood moving around so somethings up with yours. Hood pins are not the answer and are ugly.

Well i am just paranoid cause i have had a hood on another vehicle flutter for a sec, then proceed to fly up and smash the windshield and destroy the hood. Cost a lot of money to get all that fixed lol. So i will be trying to completely eliminate any hood flutter that i have. I just cant bear to look at it when it's fluttering.
