Frickin heck. Climate control totally hacked up. HALP
« on: June 16, 2009, 02:39:09 am »
Just got into under the dash in my truck. When I looked to buy it I figured there was a blown fuse or a bad switch.
Turns out its totally hacked.
Plugs are still there but found a chrome push/pull switch that turns the fans on/off lodged under the dash. The oem switch will not turn the fans on
Also, the cable that controls the temperature of air coming out of the vents (cold/hot) is gone and I have no clue where it goes to. I never paid attention when at the salvage yard

I suppose its a '75 climate control assembly? I dunno since the guy made a 75/(84 or 86) frankenstein
He started on wiring the power windows too but looks like he stopped halfway through and left both unwired  :(

I originally took the cluster off tonight to simply install a 4 speed shift indicator only to find this garbage

I need pictures of a stock non-molested (or raped in this particular instance) climate control out of the dash as well as the cable for temperature both hooked up at the control and where its going to

Also theres a little orange wire with plug (looks alot like the same used for the back of the cigarette lighter assy) thats coming out of the vacuum-run climate control thing
I dont see where it could hook up though. Its only 5 or 6 inches long

My climate control does not look like any of the ones I have from the salvage yard. The ones I have as spares for the other truck have the vacuum assembly coming straight out the back. This one in this truck, its diagonal, coming out of the right side of the assembly and is white in color

If I knew how to route the vacuum hoses, Id probably just retrofit with one of the spares I have

Ill try and get pictures of this train wreck  >:(

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance  ;)

The 75 controller is different from all others except maybe the 76. The orange wire is used to bypass the fan speed switch so that when the temp control is pushed all the way left the high speed blower turns on.

I did not take any pics of mine, sorry. I replaced my 75 cab with an 84 and kept the 84 controls.

The 75 system worked pretty good and I got used to how it worked. The 84 was in better shape, or I would have kept it.

See if you can find a 75 donor system with the parts you need, you'll have a hard time finding any of the odd parts new.

You could also get a newer controller and wiring and vacuum hoses, but there will be relay and switch differences on the engine compartment side.

BigBadJohn. on his website www.73-87.com, Jeff Drew did a writeup from another site that shows a climate control system install in a 1975 C10. But it's a complete new system, so it might not be exactly what you're looking for..wouldn't hurt to have a look tho.

Its an a/c truck
Kind of an odd duck I guess. Will be a little hard locating another controller I suppose

Should be as common as 75's with a/c in the junk yard. Saw at least 6 last year in the same pull-a-part yard.

Later controls will work, just you'll need the vacuum harness and wires.

Where does the temperature cable hook up under the dash? And what do I need to do to get to where I can work on it?

The cable hooks up to a lever on the air handler under the dash. You need to take the glove box and duct work out. It's part of the procedure for R&R the heater core if you have a chiltons manual.
