2004 gmc 2500hd not very reliable
« on: June 22, 2009, 06:39:19 am »
my dad has a 2004 gmc 2500hd with the 6.0L...i am not impressed with this truck....it doesnt seem to be very heavy duty because it needs a new u-joint, the tire fell off one time when he was driving it, theres something wrong with the steering where it makes a weird noise sometimes, we thought the computer went bad had it looked at and a ground was broken (even though he paid $500 to get a new computer), and now just this morning it wont start all it does is click when he turns the key even though he was driving it yesterday...i dont know about the rest of you but i wouldnt get one of these trucks this year

ok so i figured out it was a loose wire causing it not to start...in my opinion the only good things about this truck is the engine and how strong the frame is

There is an updated intermediate steering shaft.

U-joints go bad.

Your wheel falling off and the computer being unecessarily replaced would be the fault of your mechanic.

All vehicles break and have manufacturer defects. Get used to that!

Sounds like you just got a problem child. I have had 2 04's (along with various others from 99 up) and have good luck. Most trouble I have had os the 01s HD's with the 8.1. For some reason the crank position sensor likes to go out.
On that thought, I believe my 86 will do the same work my 01 does and I know the 86 rides smoother.

im not dumb i know all vehicles have their problems and u-joints go bad...im just complaining because they make trucks a lot worse than they used to, like my truck (84 gmc c2500) is more reliable than that and better quality

Take it easy man! He wasnt trying to insult you, just stating some facts. Every now and then you run into a lemon all brands, makes and models. It does get frustrating.

Although I like the looks of the 73-87's over the 88 and newer pick ups, the newer body style are still great trucks. I currently have a 94 Blazer (full size) with 204K on it and a 2000 crew cab with 155K on it. Both are still going strong.

I know there were lemons inour trucks too when they were new. I remember my stepdad talking to many people about the 6.2l he had in his truck. 350,000 miles, two injector pumps, one transmission, and about a dozen glowplugs. That was it, the others had heck with them and many never made it to 100,000 miles. I remember them saying the same thing about the trucks then (84-85)They werent half the trucks then as they were in the 70's. Its a pattern. Our kids will be saying the same thing about the 01 up trucks when they get our age. The thing is, we dont understand the electronic engines they way we understand the old carb and hei systems ( or some of us at least) How many people here know how to set dwell on points? I do because I still run them in some of the vehicles. Our kids will look at fuel injection and ecu's the same way we look at carbs and hei distributors.
I have had one that had over 275,000 miles on the motor, but it had been rebuilt, so technically it wasnt factory. I have seen hundres of the 88 up trucks with over 200,000 miles and still running strong. That should say something about them. We tend to dislike the things we least understand.
