a Warning To Everyone
« on: June 24, 2009, 10:10:34 am »
Caution:  Make sure your engine is turned off before working on (fan) belts!

The truck kicked a fan belt today and I went to get another one.  When I got back I read the back of the little card the belt comes in and the first thing printed on it was the warning above with the (! inside a triangle) symbol.

That made me laugh...... hard. ;D ??? ;D

What dumb warning messages have you seen that are useless to average people and only help out the most lame of society?

I mean, really  who has ever looked at a running engine ignorantly and decided the only way to change a fan belt was to somehow do it while it's running, even though you can turn the engine off with no ill effects whatsoever and do it safely?   somebody has to have done it and it got back to the company, or there wouldn't likely be a warning about it. ;D

This ought to be a good thread...lol

There is one on there that I have seen personally before.  When I bought a new chainsaw blade there was a warning to never attempt to stop the blade with my bare hands.  I don't know about you, but I wouldn't even try that with a gloved hand. :D

The sad thing is someone has done all these stupid things and that is why they have all these warnings!

the reason for these dumb warnings is that someone has been injured before while doing what the warnings say not to.  In fact, they are on there for liability purposes because stupid jurors, while listening to some influential attorney who thinks users of these items who have an IQ of -40 should have everything spelled out in order for them to use them safely, are actually believing the attorney and siding with him.

"my client cut his hand because he didn't know the knife was sharp" Jury reward, $100,000.00 and now there are warnings on knives, "Caution, blades sharp, may cut"

The classic of all classics is the McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit. "I didn't know the coffee was hot and it burned my lips and tongue".  Now, a warning, "Warning: Hot Coffee, may burn"

In fact, there should be warning stickers right next to the Chiquita Banana stickers that say, "warning, attempting to eat entire banana at once may cause choking.  And the defintion of each word should be spelled out so there will be no confusions:

Choke  [chōk]
v (past choked, past participle choked, present participle chok·ing, 3rd person present singular chokes)
1.  vi stop breathing through blockage of throat: to stop breathing, or breathe with great difficulty, because of a blockage or restriction of the throat
2.  vt prevent breathing by constricting throat: to prevent somebody from breathing by blocking or squeezing the throat

Throat [thrōt]
n (plural throats)
1.  anatomy digestive and breathing passage: the part of the airway and digestive tract between the mouth and both the esophagus and the windpipe
2.  anatomy front of neck: the front part of the neck of an animal or human being

In addition; choking could result in death.  The definition of death is (in case the user doesn't know), Death [deth]
(plural deaths)
n
1.  end of being alive: the ending of all vital functions or processes in an organism or cell
2.  way of dying: a way of dying
an easy death

3.  somebody’s dying: an instance of somebody’s dying
4.  end of something: the destruction or extinction of something

How's that for a decal to put on every banana?

I am sorry but there should be at least an ounce of common sense understood...heck, if breathing or heart beating were a "voluntary" movement, thus requiring thinking, these dips would forget to breathe and beat their heart, thus, resulting in state of death, for those who don't know what death is, see above.

I was on a drilling rig about a month ago working on a generator. The engine was flashing a code for fuel filter restriction. Clogged fuel filters of course, simple fix. I informed the motor man who is supposed to know how to do the maintenance on it,who then stormed off in a fury. He came back with filters and a bucket, andwhile the engine was running, put his filter wrench on the filter to remove it. Remember, its still running. I grabbed him in time, and pulled him to the side so he could hear me. I told him that NO ONE is fast enough to change fuel filters on a running engine. So we put the other gen online, and I changed the filters. The consumption rate on these engines is 20+ GPH, and it circulates more than that for cooling. Talk about a heck of a mess, if not a fire, if he had succeeded. The end result was me having to give a 1/2 hour class on proper mainentance procedures.

I saw another guy put his thumb over a pinhole in an injector line because it was squirting. Result: hi pressure deisel injected into his thumb. Didnt even bleed, just puffed up. Like 82K5Desiel said, the warnings are there because someone has done it.

Comedian Bill Engvall mentions the fan belt warning along with a bunch of other similar things in one of his older "here's your sign" routines.

Once again, there are morons everywhere. I have replaced several generators over the years that were washed with a pressure washer while it was running.
