that looks real safe.  Notice how that dude gets blown so that he leaves the ground for an instant and his hat gets blown off. reall safe.

It sounds like shotgun fire which leads me to beleive they are using a blasting cap and tightly bound gun powerder. Notice the hard surface they strike, i guess to activate a firing cap.
