Does this look right to you? Need quick feedback.
« on: July 09, 2009, 02:37:31 pm »
I had my oil pan leak 'fixed' on Tuesday. I don't think they got it right. I had a Fel-pro 1-piece gasket put in. I drove my truck about 60 miles each way yesterday to have my posi done and I could smell burnt oil when I came off the freeway. I figured it was just spilled oil burning off from when they removed the pan. But when I put cardboard under my truck last night just to see if the leak was fixed, I found a bunch of drips this morning. Not happy!  >:(  And I washed the undercarriage last night with SuperClean just to be certain it wasn't old oil drips.

I crawled under there this morning to find a rather wet undercarriage. Oil and water, since it was raining yesterday and I had washed under there. But pretty oily too. I found at the back of the block what looks to be an incorrectly installed gasket. It looks bulged out from the oil pan and appears to be rubbing against the crank flange (at least I think that's the crank flange). It looks like it's either ripped or was cut at each side of the 'u' of the gasket. I've attached pics. I phoned my mechanic and of course he said they didn't cut anything but he also told me they ran it for about 10 min. to check for leaks and there were none. I don't know how there could not have been. You can see a drip already starting and I had just wiped that and the oil is cold and truck hasn't run since yesterday. I am taking it in tomm. morning for them to look at. So, this doesn't look right, right?

Something is amiss there for sure, they may not have cut it, but it looks torn, broken or something & not in the correct place. Lorne

That is not right.  There is a groove across the rear main cap that the rear section should be nestled in.  That gasket split in the rear left corner.  Take it down to the auto parts store and tell them you want another.  Did you overtorque the rear most bolts?

I didn't put it in, a shop did. This is twice now I've had an issue with them, for 3 items I've had done by them. One was having the heads and cam done, which they did a great job of, but it was the owner that did it. He did it himself because he felt bad for a screw up this his employee did when they put in a starter in a 03 Tahoe we had (item #2). He pinched the crank sensor wires, causing it not to start. They couldn't figure it out, so around $600 in labor and a tow to the local GM dealer, it ran again and they told me what happened. Now this. After they fix this, I won't be going back.

yeah not properly installed. Like said it needs to be correctly installed then the pan and properly torqued. Find a new mechanic!

Thanks guys. No kidding, eh? How could a person NOT see that was messed up?  I remember driving down the freeway and I heard a big clunk against what felt like my left foot. I don't know if that was the gasket ripping or what, but it was still dripping oil from the night before.

I haven't tried turning it over to see if the piece is just rubbing aginst the flange or if it spins with it. Either way, it ain't right and they are going to fix it and get it right!

Dropped it off this morning for them to fix it. He phones me and asks if I had a non-chrome oil pan they could use. He says the chrome is so smooth it makes it hard for the new gasket to grab on and not squish out. I said to sand off the chrome or sand it anyway. He says they'll scuff it and maybe use a thin weatherstrip. I'm phoning back to say what kind of weatherstrip holds up to oil and pressure?

^ LOL   I phoned him just now and said "Um, how is foam weatherstrip supposed to hold up to oil and pressure?" He said it wasn't that kind, it was more like a silicone/sealant-type glue and works in these applications. Fair enough. Better work is all I know.

The oil in the pan isn't under any excess pressure (hopefully). 3M (yellow snot) weatherstripping adhesive works great for gluing gaskets into place. It doesn't add sealability.

My opinion is if it is squishing out, he is tightening the bolts to tight.
