i'm having a little problem in that when i screw in the studs for the waterpump pulley---which as you know the fan will also attach here, when i try to undo the bolts, the stud comes out with it. In other words i can't seperate the nuts from the studs.
What suggestions might you have?
i'm thinking about using maybe loc-tite. Because i figure if there ever is a problem with the waterpump, it would just be replaced as a whole unit anyways and i can just get new studs with the new waterpump.

what i do is take the whole stud out put 2 nuts locking them together (butting them up back to back hand tight) on the other side where the stud screws into the water pump. put a wrench on the inside nut and a wrench on the nut you want to come off and it will come off. now the trick is to get the other two nuts off, hopfully the two other nuts just come off may take a little work but they will come off right

What year and engine are we talking about? My 78 350 fan was held on by four 5/16"-24 NF grade 5 bolts.

@ Vile+bd
No, no not still working on that project; i recently had to change waterpumps and i can't get the studs out of the old pump (yes i tried the doubling up on the nuts and a vise grip etc.)
@ rw+bd
It's a 78 305 and yes i think they are 5/16 with 24 fine thread after doing a little more research.

i tried Dorman 23733 and they are too short. Not sure what is going on? Any suggestions?
After i put the fan on, there is not enough thread for the nut to go fully on the stud.

UPDATE:
After a little research, the Dormans are 1 1/4" long and the stock studs are/should be 1 1/2" long. The Dorman # 23733 are a 1/4" TOO SHORT if you want to run your mechanical fan. They will work fine for just the pulley and an electric fan though.
Any idea where i can get some OEM studs besides the junkyard? i will go to the junkyard if necessary but i'm busy and would prefer mail(internet) order.

See if your local
AutoZone
or other parts house has the
Dorman 675-520.1
studs. Dorman indicates that they are 1.5" long with the correct thread at each end.

These dorman 675-520.1 will have to be special ordered as neither autozone nor advance has them in stock. Strangely enough i can't find them at Pepboys either which usually has a great selection.
The studs do look like they will work, however.
