put gas in the tank.

Really, take the fuel line off at the carb and turn the engine.  See if fuel spurts out the line.  That will rule out carb issues.  If no fuel spurts out the line, look at the fuel pump.  May have been given a bad one or it isn't installed correctly.

Is it a mechanical pump on side of block?   Did you put the push rod inside on top fo the stem that goes into the block?  The little push rod (bar) is what the crank hits to get the stem to go up and down to pump the gas.

I put fresh fuel in it.  I took off the fuel line to the carb and cranked the engine ...no gas.  It is a mechanical pump and i greased up the bar pushed it back and inserted the pump.  It felt like it grabbed correctly as everyting lined up ok. Possible its a bad pump?

Open the gas cap and yell "GAS"  Or try priming it as suggested by dumbucket

If it has a supply and return or supply and vent could the lines be reversed on the tank?  You could pull the line off the inlet of the pump and get someone to crank the engine (watch the fan!) and feel if it is sucking...

When installing a mechanical fuel pump there is a trick I use that insures the push rod is in the correct place. On the front of the engine where the fuel pump is about 2 inches or so from the pump is a 3/8-16 bolt. Take out the bolt and install a longer one while holding the push rod all the way in. This should hold the rod in place while you install the pump. Make sure to replace the bolt with the smaller bolt so you don't wipe out the cam lobe or have an oil leak from having no bolt in the hole. I'm not 100% sure but aren't the fuel and vent lines different sizes?

On a fuel injected truck the vent is 1/4, the return is 5/16 and supply is 3/8.  They are different sizes but I have seen someone reverse supply and return.

:DYeah I finally got it worked out. It turns out that there are 3 mechanical fuel pumps available for my truck but only one will work. The first one was the wrong one. Once I installed the correct one she fired right up. Thanks for all the suggestions just the same!!!
