My parents tried taking my car away when I was 16. I took it with the spare key, hid it, and didn't go home for three weeks. Rode the motorcycle they didn't know I had! When they found out where I was staying they called me and asked me to come home. I did, they never tried it again. I was kinda rebellious, and out did anyone behind the wheel. I had to, my mother was a cop. If I didn't out do all the other kids I was considered a nark. That, plus all it took was " you won't or can't do that! " and the fact I was good at it earned me a reputation as being a nut case behind the wheel. 39 years old now, and I have been known to have a lapse in adult hood once in a while still! I will say I never raised to much cain in town where kids, and such would be in the road. Or daylight hours when there is allot of traffic. Not saying it was right but as allready stated its kinda a right of passage for most young males. I just took it to the extreme!
Oh yeah my mother kicked me out when I was 17, been on my own ever since, but thats another story!

I would buy it back in a heartbeat. I've invested a lot of time and money, but I've enjoyed everything about it. I learned a lot from this truck and I know the thing inside out. The only problem is that I don't think I'll ever have that chance. :(

Sounds like your dad was just trying to protect you from yourself before you had to learn the real hard way.....
Oh, and I also think you haven't seen the last of your truck. ;)
I won't judge you for getting tickets, you're a teen and that's what you're supposed to do.  In return, your parents are supposed to make sure you never do it again.  Seems like everyone is doing their part here.  It's how we all learn.

Having worked on a town rescue squad I have seen the results of reckless driving a few times, and the outcomes are never good.  Be very thankful you learned your lesson before you or someone else got hurt.  We've all done lots of stupid things over the years, and some of us had parents that cared enough to enforce some tough love.

Keep working at those straight A's in the meantime.
Don't disappear and keep us posted.

That truck is gone, but for me, I find the building of it the most enjoyable.
My truck is pretty much done and I drive it on the weekends, but my new project gives me that nice fuzzy feeling every  time I finish another part of it.

I wrecked a couple of cars when I was 17 as well.
We all learn somehow. I guess I learned the same as you.

I've never tracked down an old car I used to own, but if there's a way to get the vin you can contact the DMV in your state to see who owns it now. Just in case you ever want to buy it back. Your insurance company should be able to get you the vin from your policy records.

That's a complete bummer, but you are looking at it completely the right, mature way. Learn from it and move on. Like has been said already, we've all done stupid driving as teens. I can still remember quite a few really dumb and dangerous things I did in my cars just out of pride, ego and adrenalin. By God's grace, nothing ever happened from it! Freaks me out though to see kids keep doing the same thing. Like the song goes "If I knew then, what I know now..."   lol   Chin up dude, you got a LOT of years left to have another way cool truck.

One experience I recall when I had my 2wd 81 Jimmy 305 2bbl was racing a friend in his 86 Dodge 1/2-ton 318 2bbl. We were neck and neck racing at the outskirts of town towards the divided 4-lane highway, 85 MPH speedo buried. For some reason beyond me, I figured I had to get onto the wrong side of the highway after the divided portion started and keep racing just to beat him. Yeah, wow, was that ever stupid. Late at night, small city, no traffic. The look on his face was pretty shocked when I did that. Had other people with me too. Yikes. That could have been really really ugly.

I know you feel rough right now but I think and agree you're taking your lumps for your actions. Being the father of three young drivers I know it wasn't easy on your parents but its gotta be better than getting a 2am phone call. There are always going to be more trucks and cars. You sound very mature for your age accepting the consequences for your actions. I didn't like when my dad did stuff like that to me but I find myself more like him everyday you will too someday when your a father you'll totally understand.

Thanks guys. I feel like I'm pretty good at putting myself in other people's shoes, and when I imagine how my dad must be feeling, I feel pretty crappy. And I admit that what I did was wrong, and that its nobody's fault but mine. It just makes me feel really bad that I probably won't be able to afford something as nice as my truck was. There's no way I could afford to buy another one and restore it like mine was. Right now I'm saving money like crazy, so when the time comes to get a vehicle, I'll most likely end up with some plain car like everybody else, and that's actually getting me way more upset than I thought it would.  :-[
