Old blower motors get noisy?
« on: October 04, 2009, 08:57:43 pm »
After sound deadening up my truck, I have been chasing down little rattles and sounds and eliminating them. Been pretty easy so far, but I have come to the last one, and it's kinda tough to get rid of. It is some kind of droning noise, almost like when you are getting alternator feedback through your speakers. Almost like that. But this is not coming from the speakers, and when I lean my head down to the passenger side floorboard, it gets the loudest. So that has to be where it is coming from. Any of you guys ever replaced an old blower motor, and had the new one be more quiet than the old one? I am thinking the droning noise is my old, tired blower motor somehow resonating into the cab. You can hear it quite well, and it seems to change pitch slightly as the RPM's go up. However, I have confirmed that it is for sure not the speakers. Or, if you have any other ideas on what it could be, please feel free to throw that in as well. Thanks,

Skunk

Ok, I unplugged it to find out. Not it. Anything else that causes such a noise? I will record it and post it in this thread so maybe someone else could identify it.

Those old motors are notorious for making that noise.  What I did was to drill a very small hole in the top of the motor, put some 3 in 1 oil in there and plug the hole back with some type of pliable rubbery stuff that won't fall off.

Sometimes the fan will get stuff on it and cause that noise, too -- you can remove it and put some oil on it.
