oh so many questions
« on: October 06, 2009, 03:31:03 am »
lets start with the headliner.  Local fabric place has headliner material. Not really in the color I want, but they have some suede that looks super cool.  I would love to redo the headliner with that.  I like the look and feel of the factory headliner ( basically I am talking about the foam backing on the headliner material)  Could I put the headliner material on then put the suede over it?  Yes the backing board is in pretty good shape.

Or should I just get some foam glue it to the headliner and then put the suede on it.

Also thinking about wrapping the trim panels (the plastic ones)  in this suede.  Good idea?  Not so much?

The truck in question is an 86 crew cab and even though its a 4x4 I want it to be nice and not a run of the mill kind of truck.

If I use the suede then I will probably try to recover the dash with it too.

If your current headliner material isn't falling off you should be able to glue the suede to it, but it would probably be better to remove the old foam back material and glue it directly to the headliner.  What material is your backing board?

Since the factory door panels have a lot of dips, it is going to be an adventure covering it with suede.  Filling them would make it easier.

Recovering the dash yourself is NOT going to be easy as you really need to seam it where it transitions to the cluster.

We have door panels that should be availble soon for the rear of the crew cabs to match the front custom door panels we have: http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=7&Product_Code=RD-3060&Category_Code=DP

As far as covering the headliner I did the same thing cover right over the headliner material with the suede if its in good shape. Mine came out real nice. Then covering all the window post trim was easy with the suede. But I agree with Chris, you don't want to try the factory doors or the dash. I tried it on an old door panel to see but it looked like crap. I think this is the only pic I have on here.

my headliner is fiberboard?  Its really weak looking and yellowish on the back, the old headliner material was in bad shape but the actually headliner backing board is in pretty good shape.

so as far as the headliner goes I plan on getting headliner cloth with a foam back to it, putting it on the backing board, then putting the suede on the newly recovered headliner.  Like I said I like the feel of the foam behind the headliner

I have a friend who sews I have thought about leather for the dash too.  I really want the interior of this truck to be super nice.

As far as door panels go stock for now dyed to match but yes Cap the hot rod door panels are one my list.

I would imagine the dash will be one of the last things I tackle as I think it will be the hardest.

I am not worried about how hard things are to do.  If I can manage to only screw it up enough so it costs me the same as having a shop do it, then its worth it to me to learn how to do something new.

Re-doing the headliner in one of these old trucks is probly one of the easiest things you can do to them, imo. I have done it to every one of 5 of these that I have had. Just get you some 1/4 inch new foam to go under whatever material you pick to do it in. And it will look brand new.
