shaking and stalling problems all of a sudden
« on: October 12, 2009, 02:16:49 pm »
hi everyone i need some help im running out of ideas od wat this might be. first ill tell you what i have its a 1984 chevy k10 4x4 with a 350 engine edelbrock performer in take and 600 cfm carb with headers and hei. now heres the deal it was running fine for the past year then the other day i decided to spin some wheels around a corner and all of a sudden now when i stop it shakes real bad. so i go home and figure it must be the carb so i put a new one on it. i set the idle and the air/fuel good right (wrong) it idles perfevtly around 900 rpms in park and 600 in drive. so i take her down the road hit the brakes and she shuts off. when i restart her shes now running 600 in park and stalls when i put her drive.so i restart the engine idle back at 900 or so and i repeat this over and over trying to get back home good idle stall/restartbad idle/put in gear stall/restart good idle again. weird right im baffled also.i get her home finally and i check my carb no leak in the base. so i check vacuum lines and no leaks. a matter of fact ill just list all that i check and what the results were.

1- checked carb base/pass
2- check vacuum lines/pass
3-hooked vaccum gauge to truck and reads 8 psi when cranking
4-"             "          "            " and reads 20 psi running (manifold vac of course)
5- hooked gauge to breather valve and have nothing. i blew on the pcv and it all seems to be operating right not sure why im not getting anything.
6- hooked gauge to vac advance/pass

so i think i covered all vac related items that could cause this problem exept i cant figure out why i dont have anything coming from my breather should be 3-5 psi i beleive.

now im gonna look at my timing heres a list of what all ive done with that

1-checked plugs/pass
2-check wires/pass
3- check cap/pass
4-check rotor/ pass
checked timing but im not sure because it doesnt have any degree marks just a bunch of notches but it starts and shuts off fine (only deisals if i but cheap gas in)
5- i turned the crank counterclockwise then turned it the opposite direction and the crank moved about a inch and a half before the rotor button stopped moving not sure if the chain has alot of slack and if that could cause these problems also is that something that could come on all of a sudden

if anyone has any advise or has encountered or a suggestion/answer please let me know im at a stand still and i got work with out my truck seeing as i run a home improvement bussines ( its not doin good enough to hire a mechanic lol) thanks in advance

You're brake booster could be ripped. Check the one- way check valve on there too.  my 77 did that for a while and i couldn't figure it out either

Wet test the wires and see if affects the way it runs. Make sure you have good fuel volume.

I think vile is saying to get a hose or a spray bottle with water and check the coil and electrical components
