Baseball team coming to Richmond
« on: October 15, 2009, 10:17:59 pm »
The Norwich Navigators, later known as the Connecticut Defenders, which were the Yankees farm team affiliate up to 1994, ever since the San Francisco Giants AA affiliate, are now coming to Richmond since we lost the AAA Richmond Braves, who were the affiliate to Atlanta Braves and have been here for 40 years.  The Braves pulled out.  Now the franchise owner just decided on the name of the new Richmond team.....
Get ready for this one, it deserves a lot of respect towards the professional baseball world......
The Richmond Flying Squirrels.

I kid you not. On a poll on the local TV station, only 13% liked the name.  I am part of the 87% that think the owners lost their mind.  Out of 14,000 entries in the naming contest, one person entered the Flying Squirrels and won.
My entries of the Richmond Raging Rapids or Richmond Ravens (since Poe is from Richmond), or Richmond Colonials weren't chosen.

So, get ready Eastern League: Akron Aeros, Binghampton Mets, Harrisburg Senators, New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Reading Phillies, Altoona Curve, Bowie Baysox, Erie Seawolves, Portland SeaDogs, Trenton Thunder, New Britain Rock Cats
THE SQUIRRELS ARE FLYING IN

I can't see myself pulling for The Flying Squirrels.  No can do. My four year old?  maybe.

I'd like to laugh, but we have a Seadog.

Let me guess, the mascots name is "Rocky" ;D

My wife actually mentioned that, I said it is probably trademarked.  I suggest "Ricky" from Richmond.  But, then again, Richard the Flying Squirrel from Richmond--not catchy enough for kids though.  Ricky is better.

But then again, Capt. Sully...you know the Hudson River pilot.   Capt. Sully the Flying Squirrel from Richmond.

Don't worry, once they see how bad they are supported around here they will leave just like the braves.

We have a Semi-pro team here in Northern California named the Humboldt Crabs! The AAA affiliate of the A's in Sacramento are called the Rivercats...No accounting for Minor league tendencies!
