In cab gas tanks for 81' C10?
« on: November 01, 2009, 11:54:57 am »
Hi, has anyone ever heard of installing an in-cab tank in a 73-87 Chevrolet pick-up? Did they ever come in that pick-up?
Just curious because I really don't care for the crappy side mount tank. A rear mount would be cool too.
Thanks!

Here is what I did to mine.  Cheaper and easier that a rear mount - uses the same tank just relocate the filler.  You don't want an in the cab tank.  People spend good money to get them out of the cab.

So you would rather have explosive material behind you than outside the truck.
If you believing the hype about them being dangerous you have been mis-informed.

I moved my to the back using a Blazer tank, but for weight transfer.

Looks good. What do you do when you have the bed full of crap though?  ;D
Why would you want to lose what little space you have behind the seat?

I always liked the in cab tanks. I had one in an old Ford a while ago. No problems. Besides, they won't rot out inside the cab! I really do not like the side tanks.
About that Blazer rear tank...is it a pain to install? It sounds kinda cool. Thanks!

What about a rear mount tank from an old F100 instead of the Blazer tank? A lot of the Fords had the rear tank and it might work if the frames are similar. You think? 8)

The Blazer tank was a simple install you reuse what is already there and make it support piece from angle iron.  It is detailed on the link I posted.

Ford tanks don't use the same sending unit so you would have to modify it with a GM unit or swap fuel gauges.  The Blazer just bolts in and hooks up.

Nah...I still want my in cab tank. So did they ever come in the 73-87 model line? The early 70's most likely.

I've never seen one and they will rot from the inside out, and it's not pretty.  And you get to hear the fuel sloshing around all the time!  Fun!

73 up never offered them.
I have had half a dozen pre 73 Chevy trucks with in cab tanks. Most of them were either allready rotted out and leaking when I got them, or started leaking while owned them.
You say you don't like the side tanks. Why?

I've never liked side tanks. It always had to be rear mount, the old in cab, or even a 5 gallon jug. 8)

gas smell, fuel sloshing around, lost storage, ugly filler neck on the cab...no thanks!  If you are dead set on an in cab tank, then 73-87's aren't for you.  :)  Buy a older Chev or Ford.
