Radiator replase repair
« on: November 06, 2009, 09:41:12 pm »
how do I'm getting ready to put may engine back in my one ton and found a dent which wasn't there before in the right end tank can this be lightly pounded out. or should I remove the tank and pound it out. I can go straight to the dent from the top hose out let, no creases in the brass,.I'm an OK solderer.

All so I use to deal with a company out of L.A. called Well built radiator and I can't for the life of me find any #'s or reference to them has any one  used the company and are they still in existence. if so whats their#?  I loved their know how, they were very quick and had reliable rads I had good luck with them but lost their #.

Please help.

I'm not following what you're asking. Use the spell check feature too. There's a company on eBay that sells all aluminum radiators pretty cheap.

Sorry about the spelling.
I bow to your superior talents and experience, I will try to be more concise.
I have a nice 4 core radiator which acquired a dent in the upper right end tank, it is approximately 2" across the top and 2.5" down the face or the side facing the front of the truck it goes in about 1/2 an inch in a convex manner.

My concern is work hardening of the metal (brass) this can cause a week point and or blow out of my radiator.
I also discovered a crack next to the upper outlet. Between the the outlet and the core on the inner side.

should I use heat and or a Wood block to try and straighten the tank. I can go through outlet.

or can you refer me to a supplier so I can buy an end tank. I don' want to replace it if I can get away with a repair.

And thank you for the aluminum rad reference but I have all but zero income. I'm working mostly  with spare parts and left over materials, solder, flux, from my, re-plumbing of a  bath room, copper tubing.
Just a note, This does give me an excuse to learn radiator repair !!!
Kind of cool even though I it's not really what I wanted to do this week or month, I just want my one ton  4x4 running!!!

It can haul a lot, the truck used to have a boom basket in the utility bed. springs are really stacked 5 on the helpers and 12 leaves on the mains.

Thank you for your time

Maybe take a pic and post it. BUT if it aint broke...

Radiators dont really have that much pressure 16-20 psi depending on the cap. Brass and copper are pretty tuff. I dont think it will work harden with 1 dent.

Thank you for  your reply. I was able to repair the tank and solder the crack in the tank but it looks like one row of the core is shot.
I've soldered 6 pin holes I think it's not worth the time with my limited experience, and found abut 10 more. darn that was a good radiator.

I'm not able to fix the inner row so I guess I'll have to try a caprice radiator  I have.  It has a 3 core  but it's shorter and a bottom drain. so now I GET to retro fit a bracket to make it fit. the bottom won't be so bad but the top is going to be a pain!!! any ideas???
Unless I can find the other style top retainer, like in my 77GMC.  may be I'll try some angle iron and sheet metal.

Oh well, that's what I get for not storing things correctly time to clean up the shop yard again!!!!

Hay Thanks again for the feed back.
