Loose tailgate
« on: November 14, 2009, 02:13:32 pm »
Ive been working on a 1986 SWB C-10 and its just about ready for paint but one thing is bothering me. The tailgate is loose, It has some of play up and down so when driving it makes lots of noise. Am I missing some bushings or something? This is my first 1973-87 c-10 is this just the way they are?
Thanks, This site has been allot of help during this build.

Welcome,

I probably won't be much help on the tailgate as my truck bed rotted off long before I bought it.  IIRC, I think there is a "C" shaped cup on the bottom of the tailgate, it's possible yours has hogged out or rusted off.

I made an awesome stop system on my 74. It's tight and doesn't budge when it's shut. Matter of fact I was gunna get part #'s for everything and do a write up about it but got busy. I can post pix later if you'd like.

Please do!

I imagine, eventually, I'll have a pick-up bed again.

I was going to try making some bushings to take away some off the play but I'm interested to see what you came up with. Thanks

Cell phone pix

Bump stops

Striker

I used existing tailgate stops and generic rubber bumpers. It's solid as a rock.

Thats a good idea, the factory should have done it that way.  I'm going to get started on it as soon as possible.   Thanks
