Engine noise.
« on: November 18, 2009, 04:57:12 pm »
My fist though was valves rattling but i aint so sure. but while in gear the engine is making a rattle, I jacked up the rear axle blocked the front tires, started her up and put it in gear set the e-brake to apply some resistance, and the rattle appears to be in the driver side front on the engine. i do not have a/c so i know it is not a compressor. engine might have 10,000 total. 305 block small cam and new model vortec heads. later i amd gonna take off the fan and run it for a short min. just to reduce other noise to try to pin point it... any ideas ?

sorry was in a hurry and didn't spell check on the first post.. but I removed the fan just now. Noise is still there but i can not tell where it is coming from. only does it in gear. in park or neutral not a sound. But in gear it rattles mostly when it shifts into 2nd gear.

So you hear it just idling in gear too? Is it pinging? Do you have a stethoscope?

no you do not hear it at idle or revering it in park or neutral. no i don't have that tool i know what it is i can borrow one from work though. but only in gear that is why i though it is kinda funny but i know for fact it is the engine.

Did you check your u-joints? Check your flexplate to converter bolts too.

checked the bolts they were tight but i gave them a little more. but i did not drive it today and when i started up up today i was getting the rattle at start up and idle a little but while in park at about 2100RPM you can hear it good just sounds like valves kinda but once it warms up in park it is not to bad. I put some octane booster in it as well and drove it just now and no change. but it is in the back of the engine driver side... possible a lifter?

Loose header tube?  I don't mean exhaust leak, but I forgot to retighten a couple of bolts, and I thought the engine was coming apart. (tube rattling against the head)

Lifter pre-load correct?

I checked all header bolts some were not as tight as others but they are good now. i also had some play in the power steering Pump shaft so i took off the belt and ran it up the road again and the noise is still there, at about 2100RPM in park and really bad when it shifts to 2nd.
