Automatic shift indicator

How does a shift indicator mount? Two screws into the plastic part of the gauge cluster? Where does the cable hook up to? What about the light for the indicator, does it just get light from the gauges above it or do i need to find the light assembly for it too?

The cable connects to the side of the steering column.  When you move the shift lever it turns that section of the column.  The indicator also has a spring connected to it.  The spring moves the indicator back to Park.

The little slot i have shown in the red box, is that there the cable goes for the shift indicator? Does it just slip in or is there a clip or something?

Look at pic #8 on this page.  The wire he's grabbing should have a little metal clip at the end.  You just clip it onto the part of the steering column sleeve that moves with the shifter.  There is no special groove or anything.  Are you missing the clip?

I'm converting to auto from manual. I dont have the indicator yet. I need to get one. I'm trying to figure out how it hooks up. I guess maybe i will figure it out when i get it. Maybe the guy i am getting parts from will let me go pull one myself so I can see how it hooks up.

Did you see the pic event posted? It shows how it is set up. It's screwed in and the cable hooks to the moving column jacket. You just clip it on when it reads P in park.

I saw it. But everything in the pic was dark, it all kind of ran together.  So i clip the clip on the shifter sleeve and then tighten down a set screw? Like i said i'll probably figure it out once I get one but just in case. I better ask so I know what to do when i get the parts. When i get parts i'm ready to get them installed and put everything back together.

This project gets bigger all the time...  ;D ;D

I started out just changing engines and transmissions. (did that twice, now i know for sure what i want tho) But going from auto to manual I have to change columns. Also have to change pedals, and add the shift indicator. Then do a little wiring to get all the neutral safety functions working. The dash pad is in such sad shape, i'd be better off leaving it off. So now i need a new one of those. Could use to install a radio and a new rubber floor mat. Def. need a good cleaning of all the interior. Drivers side window needs work.

I want a 700r4 soon and a 14 bolt with 4.10 gears. Need a new driveshaft for the 454/400 combo and will need yet another one when i change to the 700r4 and 14 bolt.

Whew. Glad this isnt a daily driver right now. Also have a bit of body work to do (not too bad since its a texas truck) and then some paint. Its a nasty gold color right now. Should be a great truck when its done! ;D

Oh and I have located a 78 4x4 frame/axles/trans/transfer case for $200. My truck is 2wd. Can you guess what i'm thinking?

The wire runs through a guide. At the end of the wire is a clip that simply hooks onto the column jacket.
