15inch wheel backspace
« on: December 15, 2009, 01:53:09 am »
Could anybody refer me to a 15x7 wheel that would fit this truck with 3 1/2 back spacing? or less? I am just wondering because the 17's I have off of a stock 96 impala SS are still hitting the lip of the LCA even after what I feel should have been plenty of cutting/grinding.

Well I would even really like to put some 15x10's on it? I mean anything that won't scrub, and will clear my LCA. Also if anybody has a pic of how much they took off their LCA if they could post it? Maybe I can cut more.....THX

Your 17's are hitting the LCA, dropped components have a problem with 15" rims I have never had a problem with anything larger.  Can you ake a picture of where it is hitting and post it?
What components are you using for the drop?

I will take pics next time I'm at the shop. I only used McGaughy's Spindles. I will say though its rubbing the sides of the LCA on the inner lip of the rim. I had no problems with the caliper even though it is pretty close(I think even with all stock they are close to the rim though). Its really got me wild because other than that and exhaust my truck would be able to be driven daily.

That is all you have on the front is spindles, no springs?  what amount of drop?
If possible, get a picture with the rim on and the interference.

I didn't measure because I went from a 3 inch drop spring to a spindle, you know just took everything apart once. I'd say their just 2.5 drop spindles just as any others...thats probably what it dropped the truck? I know it did sit a little lower with the 3 inch drop coils, but they were 2-3 years old, and had be driven on by very hard by myself.

I have no idea why you would have clearance problems with just spindles if you put the stock springs back in.

maybe putting the stock springs back in that changed the angle on the spindle so now the caliper or spindle is hitting?
I swear i was just going to put a new motor in but...

that is crazy man.....you think it'd be possible that the wrong coilk springs could create a clearance problem? I have the same 17's and still dont clear after quite a bit of grinding on my LCA.........

Can you not post pictures?

All the springs are going to do is make the truck lower.  I have never had an issue related to springs.  The spindles will cause you to have clearance problems.

Check your balljoints.  Are you sure it scrapes on both right and left wheel?  I had similar scraping once caused by balljoints on a non-lowered '79 Monte Carlo.  There were no other symptoms of a bad balljoint.
