Welcome aboard.  Let's see some pics of your truck.  Click Me

As far as horsepower, you are way ahead of the game with a 454.

This isn't exactly a budget build, but compare these numbers to any crate in this price range:

When you post, theres some buttons to press, highlight one and it should say insert image-[img)(img) then copy your image between those two and there you go :)

The philoshophy behind performance tuning American V8's seems to be different from tuning import engines (though it shouldn't be).  Ricer guys (at least the ones I know) tend to put too much stock in air filters, spark plugs, ignition wires, etc.  These are not performance-enhancing items.  You will see no serious gains from these things, UNLESS you are in need of a tune up.  Then that would be the only place to start.  Add distributor rebuild/replacement, ignition timing, carb rebuild/tuning to the list.

From there, a set of full length headers and a free flowing dual 2.5" (for stock-ish BBC) or 3" (for mild-performance BBC) exhaust would be the way I'd go.  For best performance Dynomax UltraFlo or Magnaflow mufflers are a safe bet.

Happy with the performance yet?  No?  Then I'd seriously consider plucking that engine and going through the whole thing.  You can see some gains by swapping intakes and cams with the engine in, but the best performance comes from looking at the engine as a system.  Heads (flow, combustion efficiency, etc), static compression (matched to cam, fuel octane), cam (matched to heads, compression, displacement, intended usage)....the list goes on.

I personally like K&N, If you have a Q-jet, stick with it. I like edelbrock and lunati stuff, but that's me. This is your truck too, so make sure You like it!!!  Oh, yea- Hookers headers for my exhaust opinion.
