rebuilding quadrajet
« on: December 19, 2009, 10:00:53 am »
Hi guys I no someone can help with my problem. I rebuilt my quadrajet carb and also modified it. I bought a book on how to modify quadrajets in the book they say to get some more CFM out of the quadrajet you can remove the choke I do have an electric choke on it that works fine. the truck is my daily driver from april to sept and I live in ontario so we do get some cold mornings here will I run into any problems removing the choke. (just want a second opinion) also as I was puttin the carb back together i ran into a problem puttin the secondary lock out cam on which runs from the secondary cam to the choke. does anyone no what this does? I cant find any information on it thanks Marc

Unless youre running alot of rpms , removing the choke will be more trouble than its worth. I wouldnt do it, and I doubt you'd notice any benefit. Thats more of a race modification. AS far as the lockout cam, I bellieve it is there to keep the choke from being on when given throttle. It kicks the choke off so it doesnt run too rich. Without seeing the part your talking about, its hard to say for sure.

I wouldn't remove the choke.  Is this for an IMCA SportMod car or something?  LOL

Marc, These guys have the right idea. The only time this could benefit the engine is WHEN it needs more cfm. Not knowing which carb you have (either a 750 or 800), unless you have good flowing heads, intake & substantial RPM'S a 350-383 doesn't need more than 750. Leave your good working choke set-up alone!
As for the secondary lock-out, if we're talking the linkage going from cam to the secondary flaps...this prevents the secondaries from opening while the choke is on to prevent too high of RPM (you beating a cold engine) before the engine is warmed up/choke is fully opened. You don't need it, but the idea behind it is a sound one. Hope this helps! Lorne

Might be digging this one out of the grave but I am having.....problems.....and Is that piece that the pencil is touching supposed to float just freely back and forth? what is it that changes it to allow the secondarys to suck in air?

That prevents the secondary throttle blades from opening when the choke is on.  It's always loose and wiggly on every Q-jet I've ever messed with, but it works.
