how to remove chrome off old wheels

i found a nice set of wheels that are chrome but they are in bad shape chrome is comming off ..what can i use to remove most or all of it to prepare them for paint and pinstripe

thanks is there something i can just spray on them myself to make the chrome peel or blister then i sand it off

Have you got a LOT of free time on your hands? What kind of wheels are these?

yes ..they are just aset of 20 " 6 spoke wheels with a 3' lip .............the chrome is pitted and some rust on the back they was on a truck that sat up for some time so they began to rust

Again my only suggestion would be a heavy blasting followed by a medium and fine... Then powder coat

You could rent a blaster if you want to do it yourself.

You definately need a heavy duty blaster...the little ones won't work.  I used a small/cheap blaster and didn't even scratch the chrome.  I took some sandpaper to it and only made small scratches in it.  After that I put a flap wheel on a angle grinder and it yanked the chrome right off, but I only did that to the inside of the rim(bead area)...it's too aggressive to use on the face of the wheel.  So yeah, see if you can have somebody sandblast it with an industrial blaster.

You can take the to a chrome plater and have them reverse the process.
