crossover steering?
« on: December 28, 2009, 03:39:05 pm »
what is everyones opinion on crossover steering? if i run a 6 inch lift with 36x14.50 tires should i do the conversion? or should i be ok with the old traditional steering? my truck is a 76 3/4 ton with a dana 44 front end. i will be the doing the occasional wheeling. nothing too extreme, just beating through the bush and driving through a little mud. should i try the old steering setup and change over if i need to? and how hard would it be to do the conversion?

thanks

i am a fan of crossover steering, though have never run one on my truck,   never going to lift it high enough to need it.  and if i run big tires, it would be on a hydro steering setup.
i think with the 6" lift,  you are right on the line of going with the crossover.   you should be able to use the traditional setup without a problem, but if you start running larger/heavier tires, the crossover would be beneficial.
i am not sure how difficult it is to do, but with some searching and research you should be able to accomplish it.

You can always convert later if you find it necessary.

For what say you are planning, you should be fine with the stock setup.

The stock 4WD system is an Ackerman system.

Not an offroader, but my understanding is that the stock steering on these trucks only shows its weakness when you are doing some serious wheeling, then it's absolutely useless.  You can run into situations where the steering wheel is locked out and the wheels are still pointing straight foward if the articulation of the front axle is great enough.  But if you are just mud bogging and the like, I would think stock is fine.

It really benefits rock crawlers trying to twist up the axles, otherwise, stock if fine.
