opinions on cam selection plz!!
« on: January 02, 2010, 09:27:16 pm »
hi everyone  just looking for opinions/suggestions.  the project is 84c1500 4100lbs, 3.08 rear, th350, powertrax locker coming.  i have vortec heads that im currently re-working for high lift , mild porting in seat throats, screw-in studs , ls6 yellow bee-hives ect...     the block is a 880 block 1 pc rear main and roller cam.   im having a hard time deciding about camshafts.  im stuck on lt4 hotcam or the likes of a compcam xr270hr.  the more i look into this the more confused i get--- if i want to run the lt4 hotcam i need like 11:1 scr just to get a good dcr of 7.79:1.  this seems high and im new to this.  i just want a nice power/torquer cam with a useable rpm of say 1500-5500.  gas mileage not a concern, just vacumn for the brake booster.  sorry for the long post    if you need more info just holler  thanks in advance and again all input is appreciated    P.S.  1/4 mile time right now 16.5 with 1 wheel burn show  want to get into maybe 14's with new motor-locker-tires ect....

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-1103/ 214/224*  .442/.465 with 1.5 rockers

drop to a 3.42 or 3.73 gear will help..

whats your current C/R number?

what stall convertor do you have?

compression i havent chosen yet because of this whole dcr thing lol.  i want to keep my 3.08 for the highway.(i know, not the best for performance haha) also i heard about vortecs handling more compression and about quench factors which is all confusing me for what to pick.  i currently have a B@M torkmaster 2000 stall in right now.   thanks man
  roller cam though

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12370847/ this said LT1 cam that you speak of? vac boost breaks might be and issue with the cam... vac resevoir would be a good idea with that camshaft.

quench is how close the piston crown is to the clynder heads..

i would figure out what static cr you want to run and go from there...you got half the problem solved... that being your rpm/power range you want..

10:1 would good on pump gas and a carb setup... need 93 octane though... or pull lots of timeing out to run 87..

less quench(close the piston and head are) less likely for detonation. less the better.. this is machined and can be played with via head gasket thick ness.. .030" quench is usually the norm..

I believe this is the cam in question....

Between the two I would personally run the Comp.  DCR is theoretical, in the real world a 10.1 would be just fine in your application.

I would defintely recommend a gear swap with either grind.  I'd bet your combo would be quicker with a smaller cam with such a high gear.

I like the Comp Cam better.  More torque out of that tighter LCA.  In fact, it would be better if you had those same lobes ground on a 108 LCA and used 1.6:1 rockers on the intake and 1.5:1 rockers on the exhaust.

I'd suggest This with a little more gear and 700R4 or if you're keeping that combo this

thanks for the replies guys!!  looking thru these cams i am concerned with 2 things:
       1) should i be getting a split-duration cam for "maximum vortec effiency"
       2) i need non-aggressive lobe ramp speeds  to match my ls6 springs( i am under the impression they cant handle fast ramp speeds, thats why im thinking the "hot cam" because of these 2 aspects.
plzz keep em coming  thanks everyone!!!

I know these guys are giving you great advice based on experience and knowledge, but I'd like to suggest looking into a custom cam also.  It may cost a little more, but it may make the difference between a decent combo and an outstanding combo.  You should get in touch with a cam/valtrain expert that can look at your whole setup and grind you a cam to work with what you got.  I found out that there's a lot more to cams that just picking a duration and lift.  There's LSA, intake centerlines, DCR, SCR, PTV, lobe profiles, springs, lifter preload, pushrod length, and a bunch of other stuff that I don't understand.  A cam expert will know what grinds/lobes will do exactly what you want and still work with what you got.  Good luck with your project.
