Cant remove old controll arm bushings
« on: January 06, 2010, 05:28:03 pm »
I ordered 2.5 drop spindles for my 84 c10. While I have everything apart im sand blasting the upper and lower controll arms and installing polyurathane bushings. But I have run into a snag I cant for the life a me get the old bushings out of the control arms, i have tried heating them and taking an air hammer to the bushings collar. I did get one side out about half way but no further any tips or tricks? Im apprenticing for a mechanic and all the other mechanics have put in there 2 cents but nothing is working. Thanks marc ???

A ball joint press, press, or air chisel is the way to go.

Did you get the inner sleeve off the shaft? 99% of the time that sleeve rust to the shaft and is imposable to remove,  cut your losses and buy new shafts when this happens.

here's a trick I learned the hard way on the lower a arm bushings.  soak them w/pbblaster and before you take the lower arm off, work it up and down.  this will unstick the bushings from the shaft, making them much easier to remove.  also the factory flares out the end of the bushing that is to the inside.  I took a rod and hammer and tapped around the entire edge, being careful not to hit the lip of the a arm itself.
