Removed transmission hump
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:27:33 pm »
Yup, I was bored and wanted to know what the top of my transmission looked like (not really, I wanted to clean the top of the tranny and T case) so I removed the transmission hump. There were two types of sealant. One that was between the two lips (floor and hump) was red. I thought it was rust at first, but I believe it was red foam. 30 years later, it didnt look like foam. That was probably there to prevent metal on metal squeaking. I took a wire wheel and got it all off and cleaned up the lips. The second sealant was a white-ish rubbery compound and that was applied after the hump was bolted in. It sealed up the edge and was harder to remove. I had to use a razor blade to get most of it off. That was probably to keep the mud/snow/oil/water etc out.

Any suggestions on what I can use to put it all back? I was thinking of doubling up some foam that comes in a roll and has one sticky side and then using a glass sealer on the edge after its bolted back in.

The foam will work good. I would use seam sealer on the edge to cover the joint. You can buy it by the tubes or qt. can.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

You can run a bead of RTV on it and let it cure before you put it back on.

Did you have to cut the cover out, or is it just bonded in?

By reading, I'm under the assumption it's the bolted in, 4x4 hump.

I used the foam on mine, (actually I think Blazin suggested it).  I didn't do seam sealer until I put the rubber mat down.  Drove it all winter/spring with just the foam. (and steel floors)

Stewart, ya its just bolted in with the original seam sealant. I found the edge of the hump and traced it with my box cutter all the way around and popped it off.

When I put the foam on and bolted it back down, I have no reason why, but I forgot to paint the bare metal edges before putting it back on (dummy). The bare metal is from the wire wheel I used to take the old foam off.
