What causes a carb fire after the motor shut off?

Your float could have stuck.  Was it a Q-Jet?

Check your ignition timing, idle speed and check for tune up first.

it takes a minute to warm up some times it will stall then once its warmed up itll back fire now and then i was told it was bad gas

My neighbor just went through a similar problem with his 81.  His would run like crap, and after a good warm-up it would idle decent.  We tried an edelbrock, holley, and a demon.  We settled for the 850 Demon since I knew more about it than the Edelbrock.  It would respond to revving 7 out of 10 times.  We took it for a drive and as soon as we came to a stop it stalled and the carb caught on fire.  It did this about 5 times in the one spot while trying to get the truck turned on so we could return to the garage.  A few days later we learned that another neighbor had installed the plug wires wrong(all one place over on the dist.) and he advanced the timing way too much.  Once they fixed that, the truck ran good.

x2 on timing it sound like it too advanced the pop out the pipe i have that i just call it a randome pop cause its not something that happends all the time i don't know what causes it

I retarded  the timing and the fire went away but it still pops now and then. i also got and exhaust leak i think or vacumm lines one of the two.
