Switching to an electric fuel pump.
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:00:56 pm »
How much work is involved in getting rid of the mechanical fuel pump and installing an electric? I'm not even sure how the electrical is normally run for it. I just need more reliable fuel delivery for offroading. The mechanical pump just doesn't cut it.

It wasnt that hard when I did it. I have a holley pump bolted near my tank. I ran the wires for it which are setup on a relay. Works fine. Ive heard they are better pushers than pullers, thats why I put it by the tank. Dunno if its true, but its never failed me.

Why doesn't the mechanical pump cut it? It delivers more fuel volume than you need for a carburetor. If you do install an electric fuel pump like beastie said put it close to the tank if not even a submersed pump in tank. You'll need a pressure regulator, and wiring it up can be done many ways. Do you want it to come on manually? With the ignition? Only when the engine is running?

Adding a Electric pump in hopes of helping offroad fuel delivery in my opinion is going in the wrong direction.  Like Vile said, the mechanical pump is plenty for a Carb.  It only needs 5-7lbs of pressure, and as long as the motor runs and the pump is good you have plenty of fuel.

What is the fuel delivery issue?  Truck stalling? off camber driving, etc?  I would guess that it is the kind of carb you are using more than fuel delivery.  Just guessing, but are you running a Holley?

Actually I'm running an Edelbrock performer. Which I realize is not very good for off road use. I read another thread where someone said they had a glass fuel filter and it was suggested it might be in backwards. lol. Maybe that is part of the problem. It was on the truck when I bought it.
