oldsmobile 455 engine
« on: February 27, 2010, 01:04:30 pm »
Hey guys I have a rebuilt oldsmobile 455 motor that produces 575 torque at 3500 rpm I am debating on putting this in my 1 ton 86 4x4 crewcab. I need to figure out what transmison to run. I would like an overdrive unit that is heavy duty for towing and set up for 4x4. I also  need to figure out how to bolt this torque monster in the truck . Any suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Find an early square-body with the Olds-derived 350 diesel... They will have all the mounts and brackets you need to swap in the 455, and most have hydro-boost brakes.  Two of my friends have late-70's pickups with 455's and love them.  One is a Buick, one is an Olds, both run BOP TH400's, but you could check into a built 200R4 or any other OD with an adaptor to fit the BOP bellhousing.

SOLD - Tan 1984 Silverado - 383, 700R4, Detroit Locker & 3.73's...

Ask Haulinit. He can probably answer every question you have on this one.

Well if not, It won't be because I didn't try.
As far as the tranny...The 4L80 is really the only OD I'd use for a project like that, you'll need an adapter plate to mount it up to the Olds engine, no big deal at all. If you decide to pass on the cost of the OD, a BOPC bell housing TH350/400 could be used with the 4x4 output shaft installed.
As for the engine mounts...I've done them a couple different ways & are not hard to make, likely much easier/cheaper than finding the Diesel mounts. Here are a few pic's. Hope this helps, Do it! You'll love it. Any other questions, Just ask! Lorne

In your pic's, is that a Toronado exhaust manifold? What did you use on the driver's side?  Thanks Ken

Speedway offers adapter plates to go from Chevy to BOP, or visa versa.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

Ken, Welcome to the site! We really live quite close...I was in your town last night. We ate @ the Springfield Grille. I also recognize your name from some time ago on RealOldsPower.
Yes that is a '72 Toronado manifold on the Right (2 1/4" outlet) For the Left I used the original one from the '71 B-Body engine. The placement for both is about perfect compared to the SBC...I had about a foot of pipe still on from when I removed the manifold from the Toronado, just rotated it with a pipewrench, trimmed it up & cut off the existing (but newer) exhaust & welded the Two together. Same for the Left, I had the complete Y-pipe from the B-Body...cut it in the center under the oilpan, rotated it 90* with a pipewrench & cut the existing headpipe off & welded the two together. I did the whole swap in a weekend, but had planned out quite well in advance. Any other questions...Just Ask or PM me, Glad to help! Lorne

If you've been to the Olds Nationals @ Norwalk in the past 10 years...Our other Olds powered square body should look familiar to you

Hello Lorne,  Thanks for the reply. I have seen your truck at the Miller meet. Very impressive! I've though about converting my car hauler to Olds power. I use to be into Olds but life got into the way. I just retired so I hope to get back into Olds once I get caught up on some projects. I guess I should start looking for the diesel frame mounts. I be looking for you at the Miller meet.Ken
