Engine painting
« on: March 21, 2010, 05:13:05 pm »
Hey i have a motor that i painted about 6 months ago. it was a freshly fatted and cleaned block. What do i need to do to change the color. Do i need to strip it back all the way down to bare metal..

Also i would like to color match it to my truck so can i use a base coat clear coat that i have for my truck? or do i need to stick to the high temp paint.

Do i need a primer?

I wouldn't use base clear on an engine. I'd recommend stripping it and cleaning it. A primer or adhesion promoter is a good idea. Rustoleum works good. Thin it a little and spray it.

Mine was cleaned, sanded, prepped, primed and sprayed with BC/CC.

The last one was primed with Expoxy primer, same system as you would use on the truck.

This project won't be going anywhere.  I may be buried in it! LOL.  It was my second 73-87 I ever had.
