I checked out a 2000 Silverado 2500HD today
« on: March 24, 2010, 09:46:40 pm »
At least it was a nice day for a drive...  I found a 2000 Silverado LS 2500HD in Delphos, OH that I went to see today.  It was a one owner 91K miles with a 6.0L 5 speed and 3.73 rear end.  What a disappointment for power, what a dog.  Nice truck otherwise for being one from Ohio.  In the past I rode in a 99 1500 series with a 5.3L and that ran very well.  Oh well, I will continue my search for the perfect candidate donor truck for my 85 and forget the newer ones with all the creature comforts.

I wonder if there was something wrong with that 6.0, I've driven them before and thought they went good. I have a 2000 crew cab (old body style) 4x4 with a 350 vortec and 3.73's with an auto. My truck with 170K on it could use a little more power but I'm surprised to hear complaints about the 6.0.

I agree Zieg, they're not impressive to say the least. For GM to redesign the small block completely and come out with a not so fuel efficient dog is pretty sad.

Thanks Vile for the comment.  I just couldn't believe the lack of power.  I just assumed it would have been a peppy little number after feeling the 5.3L in my buddies truck.  I wasn't expecting a tire burner but thought it might have some low end torque.  It reminded me of my 4.9L in my 96 F150.

The new 305? My cusion has an 04 25 HD with the 6 liter. It's a pooch! My buddy had an 01 with the 5.3, and man that thing had power.

All normal practicality and rational money handling goes out of the window when it comes to my truck.

Maybe the increased weight and the driveline losses of the heavier-duty stuff in a 3/4 ton is eating up the power?

What's with vehicles nowadays and the huge amount of weight?? I thought we were supposed to be getting more efficient, not less. It bugs me to no end for vehicles to be advertised with all this horsepower and then you drive them and it's like  ???

If you guys don't like the 6.0 you would really hate my truck. To me the 6.0 went good  compared to it.

I am not dis'n the 6.0L by any means.  It was probably the whole package with gearing and the 5 speed.  An automatic may be better, just not to my liking for my needs.

My ex g/f had a 3/4 ton 04 with a 6.0 we put one of those custom performance chips in it, and if you had it set right it'd burn the tires(33's) no problems

You know how many people come to me with those trucks and say they have no power? It shifts oo soon, it's a pig etc. and want me to juice them up? Very unimpressive.

i think the 6.0s' are detuned from the factory to look better on paper and make the goverment happy, if you chip them and do exhaust and intake work i guess they are supposed to be much much better. my gf's dad has one that has some work done it seems pretty quick.i think its a 03 2500, not positive on the year though.

I'm surprised to hear so many say that the 6.0's are dogs.  I am quite happy with the 4.8 in my 2000 Silverado 1500 4x4 ext cab, short bed, 5 speed with 3.73's, all stock except for a chambered muffler and dual tailpipes, turning 265 tires.  It runs way better than any 305 I've been in and runs as good if not better than the 95 Silverado 350 TBI 5 speed truck I had.  The fuel economy is quite respectable also, but I will say I noticed a big difference depending on the octane of fuel I ran so I have been sticking with 91.  I would seriously consider a 3/4 ton 6.0 5 speed truck for the additional towing capacity but they are just so hard to find in an ext cab short bed 4x4 without all the cushy options that like to break.
