74k20's 1974 K20
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:25:33 pm »
I'm still rather new, but have made a couple post with GREAT responses - thanks.  Figured it's time for a couple pics of what's going on.

Went to tow the '77 donor truck next to the road for the tow truck to grab.  Had to take a couple pictures.  All the mold and moss will have to be washed off, as I HATE working on a dirty vehicle, even while stripping it.  But I like "before" shots.

My '74 is a K20 with original great running 350/rebuilt th350, np203 combo.  The '77 donor is a K10 with 400/th400, np203, tow package and AC.  Garage is cleaned out and ready for some major tinkering/swapping.  I'll do a mild rebuild of the sb 400 for sure and swap later, not sure about the th400.  I'm NOT into hard core wheeling, but rather daily driving goal.  I also have a 700r4 in stock I'm wondering/thinking about.

I'll be adding some front hubs and the 203 kit in the next couple weeks.  Followed by a 2 1/2" Skyjacker Softride complete lift kit system, 285x16's & hopefully retro type wheels this summer.  Might even swap in the AC stuff from the donor.  Rest of the '77 will need to leave my driveway rather quick and most likely list on Craigslist for quick sale.

Hopefully the fun will begin next week.

Got the '77 home last night.  Cleaned up pretty nice on the outside at least.  Kind of a shame to part this out, but it's got alot of parts I need/want.  Hopefully going to be a fun weekend of wrenching ahead.

Here are some before and after pictures of yesterday's project.

Small 2.5" Skyjacker Soft Ride springs front/back.  Rancho RS9000XL shocks and Rancho stabilizer.

Obviously more stuff coming as soon as funds come in, especially tires/wheels.

Thanks for everyones help.

I would bring the back up another inch but it looks good. You should ditch the running boards too

The driveway just starts to dip where it was sitting.  It's actually more level then I expected on flat.  Sort of wish I would have done the 4" lift, but that defeats the purpose I was heading for (retro, practical, semi daily driving).  Besides my Grandpa would NOT be happy with me putting a "lift" on his truck while he's still around (90yo).  Decided on the 255x85x16's, so that should help with the looks a tad more.  Replacing the body bushings should also help level out as one side is about 1/2 lower in the back.

YES YES YES the running boards have to go. But the wife and my kids use them, so I have to wait for some more "hobby" funds to come my way before getting some modern type, or maybe just a step.  Trying for the safety and dependability items 1st, so tires and wheels are needed as soon as I can afford them.  The old miss match brand bias ply's ride rough and wander, and the split rims are heavy.  The also worry me if I ever have a tire/wheel issue on the road, expecially if something happens while the wife is driving.  I'm always keeping an eye out on Craigslist for some old 16" slots.  Not looking forward to a spending cash on a new set of tires and wheels.  New tires I'm fine with, but both would be rough.  Expecially since this winter will also be tire time for the family SUV.

Thanks for the comments

MJ

I don't know if you have any conversion shops near you but you could get brand new take offs, if you like the new stock steel wheel type.  There are some locally advertised by me for $600, just a thought...

Love the truck, lift, and wheels! That is one sharp truck! You will be surprised how much taller the 255's will make it.

Tell us more about this truck and keep the pictures coming!
