Herculiner on rockers / bondo?
« on: April 04, 2010, 10:38:06 pm »
Hello, I have an 87 Chevy 1/2 ton I recently put in rockers, cab corners, and fenders. To save time/money from doing a "good" paint job, I was going to put herculiner about 8 inches up along side the hole pickup. Ive allready decided to get Herculiner. My question is how will it apply to bondo if at all. How about fiberglass, or bondo with primer on it. I wanted to do some basic body work before I put the herculiner on...or is herculiner that rough it will cover weld/grind marks, etc? Any help appreciated.

It may not adhere to bondo very wellI think it works alot better to bare metal.I used herculiner on the entire inside and underside of my cab.So you may not want to use it on the outside but i would use it on the underside..

thanks

We call that redneck rally stripes around here. It works for a quick fix but it's probably not too fun to work with if you need to do more body work in the future.

My opinion here, but Herculiner sucks!
If you have to use a brush / roll on liner I would use Bondo brand. It has a catalyst. It dries because of a chemical reaction not just being exposed to air, and UV rays won't bother it so much. As far as over body filler of any brand It should have a high quality primer over the filler. Such as a high build urethane primer. Transtar has this that you can roll on, it works real good. After it drys you sand it like any spray on urethane primer. This will give the bed liner a mechanical bond.
I would use SEM brand spray on liner. It can be applied with a Rocker Shutz gun, but lays out nicer with the gun SEM recommends.

Blazin,
i used herculiner on both of my trucks and let me tell ya man home deopt slapped a pallat of stone bricks on it and it didnt even budge the floor on my dodge. It has since faded to a dull black but hey its a truck and as long as you prep it right it comes out great and i cant complain 1 bit.Now i almost bought that stuff from dupli color till alot of you all here warned me about it. But i guess its all a matter of opinon here right?? If we all liked the same year trucks or liked everything in common this world be a very boring .So i agree on the primer as you reccomended for this thread but in my honest opinon i wouldnt put the bed coating on the outside i think it be a total mess if you did and like someone else said you get into a collision and need to replace the panel be like trying to break concrete apart with a plastic butter knife...

thanks

I know a guy that used it along the bottom edge of his Caravan after some cheap body filler rust repair for inspection. It looked kinda crappy. Then he washed it, he spent a few hours picking all the fuzz off of it from the wash mitt!! ;D  ;D
I used it years ago in a bed, I prepped it very well, even sprayed on Flash Bond adhesion promoter before I applied it. It didn't last well at all. I agree on the Dupli Color stuff its even cheesier then the Herculiner!

ive used that bondo brand and the brand sucks, big time, its not textured like other roll on bed liners, and the bed i put it in was sand blasted and then scuffed real well, and it still didnt stick, i wouldnt use that stuff on anything ever again, ive used herculiner on the underside of my 83 c-10 cab and it turned out great, i would recomend it to anyone who was looking for a good roll on product and its good for more than just a bed liner
