What is (Hydroboost)?

I'm getting ready to order a new power steering pump and hoses. After reading the thread about differences in hoses, and not being a "Hydroboost" System. What is a Hydroboost system? what years did they come in? or is it just an upgrade.

Hydro boost was only on 1 tons, all diesels, and all GM's full size wagons. The brake booster uses the power steering pump for its boost instead of vacuum.

Its the power assist for the brake. Instead of having vaccum(brake booster) it uses the power steering pump and fluid. Its factory on 1 tons and diesels

Why was Hydroboost necessary anyway? Was it the weight of the vehicle which made it require more power at the brake booster that regular engine vacuum could not produce?

Diesel Engines don't produce enough natural engine vacuum while the power steering system provides more than enough pressure. An artificial vacuum pump was used in some light duty applications either pulley driven or gear driven off of the cam. Heavy Duty braking systems worked well with hydroboost too so gas engines also got them. The problems with them are usually oil leaks, morning sickness or accumulator failure.
