Junk Yards! just aint what they use to be"
« on: April 17, 2010, 07:02:50 pm »
Well I had a Day off Friday, and went junk yarding looking for some parts for my 85 K1500 (Project Cross Bred) Mainly just miscellaneous parts. But one piece i need badly is my Power Steering pump brackets. I can not find the corner piece that ties the head bracket to the Pump. What really get's my goat!Is One yard in particular had two of our trucks, One was a stepside and one was a LWB fleet. The Stepside had a smashed cab and the fleet was missing the Axles. The kicker is the Guy says I don't want to take nothing off them Trucks! WHAT!! There in the Junk Yard. I thought this is how they make their Money!! (Parting out Vehicles) Both Trucks had what I needed, and he wouldn't sell them to me. (Go Figure) He says I have a used Pump..LOL..I have a new pump and Hoses. I just need the stinking corner Bracket..Oh well, the search continues. Or better yet I will get a piece of steel and make my own :-X

I'm done ranting now..LOL

We have a junkyard like 1.5 miles from my house like that.  He actually has 6 or 7 of our trucks, ranging from no engine to rusty but totally complete.  He won't let you touch them, and they've been in that spot for like 15 years now...  Crazy irritating.  At least cover em up :P

I have a several yards near me that get our trucks in all the time. I buy stuff off them just to have if I know its a hard part to get a hold of. But on the other hand I very rarely sell stuff off my parts trucks. I have a line of people asking me for parts on a regular basis and allot of the time I say not for sale. I hear about it second hand they go around complaining I have what they want and won't part with it! Depends on who it is too.

I hear where your coming from "Blazin" I would be the same way if it was my parts truck and I needed it for my personal use. But these were the only two trucks in the yard and they were thrashed. I think he was driving a Dodge. I figured any old small block Chevy would work, But I was wrong there too.

Bring a hot babe to the junkyard with you. They'll let you take anything you want if they can just drool over her for a few minutes. It works lol

I dont have a junkyard, but I will be parting out a few parts trucks in the next month or so from my latest aquisition. I'll let you guys know what I got when I get them here, and you can tell me what your looking for. They will be a 73 C10 lwb, 77 C20, 79 C10lwb (body is rough) and an 83 or 83 C10 lwb. Im just keeping the 80 SWB. These trucks are plentiful in this area.

Junk yards around here are bad.
A NP A833 trans with no warranty (even if its bad when you get home) was 400 or 450 picked up a rebuilt for 595
Headlight assembly for a 04 cavalier 150 (new is 95)
So I gave up on the bone yards around here if Chris cant get if for our trucks I just make it lol

They got one of those new Pull-a-Parts down here in Lafayette. It's pretty cool and kind of strange at the same time. You have to pay a buck to get in the yard. They take your picture and stamp you hand like a night club. That's kind of strange. They got a guy with a computer and you can tell him what you want and his computer will cross reference different makes with the same parts. That's cool. The good part is that everything is organized by make and all the vehicles are off the ground in neat rows. No snakes!  :)  Plus, once you get in the yard you can just wander around and look at everything if you want to. And, they have big, heavy duty wheelbarrows for you to roll your tools and stuff around in. On top of that you can log onto their web site and see what vehicles are in the yard before you leave home. And the parts are dirt cheap. I bought two pretty good A/C vents for my 79 C-20 for $5.00 and a 4.3 TBI spacer for $1.00. A tire and a steel rim of any make is $14.00. Overall pretty cool place.

Bobcooter" That's what I'm talking about! Now that is a cool junk Yard. Even if the owner asks you to dance! with parts that cheap, you just can't say No. The only Problem I have about ordering online is the shipping. It cost more to ship it than the part cost.

In my defense I might never get around to using some of my parts either> But the slim chance I would need it , it would be the part I sold!!

KY...Rob, if you ever find a decent junkyard with some of our trucks in it, I'd love to know about it.  I haven't searched desparately, but Every yard I have checked around here junks everything that's more than a few years old!  I'm near Louisville, which is filled with yards but I haven't figured out who carries older vehicles.  I'll probably have to go to a smaller yard in a more rural area.  Drop me a line if you find some of our trucks in Kentucky!

Hey KY Rob, they got one in Louisville. I don't know how far that is from you though. And to Blazin, you don't need to defend yourself about the parts. It's just like you said, everytime I've ever cleaned my shop out and gotten rid of stuff, it takes about two weeks before I need it.
