I did the same thing, except with autometer gauges. go buy a speedo cable, cut it about 6 inches from the gauge. Cut the black cable housing shorter so that the actual cable is sticking out. Use a drill to spin the cable. You will be doing this for awhile.
Because I did this with autometer gauges and not stock, I dont know if you can access the back of the odometer and do something different.

I wouldnt worry about legalities on these trucks. They are generally beyond their limits. you should be able to rotate it with a drill, but pulling it apart and doing it is tricky.

On that topic, does anyone know how to adjust the electronic odometer in 1989-91 suburbans? I just changed drivetrains and gauge clusters and want to match the odometer new to old.

Capt, did they offer a trip odometer in any of the mechanical speedometers?

I got the gauges out of a 1991 GMC Suburban and it has electronic odometer, speedo and trip.

yes the trip meter was an option.
Da67goatman post a pic. If it is electronic (I have never seen a 73-91 with it) there is no way to change it.

Here's the connection on the trans tailhousing, it goes right in place of the mechanical cable style. The gauge end of the wires is part of the main plug-in connector that goes right into the cluster.

This may sound silly, but can you turn the ignition to "on" without starting the engine and rotate the speed sensor with a drill and roll the miles that way? Just a thought for the electronic speedo.
