I HAVE A PROBLEM
« on: May 01, 2010, 03:58:28 pm »
I have a problem and its a real head scratcher. so i was going to oil prime my motor today before I put it back  in the truck and im only gettin oil out of the drivers side push rods. not one push rod on the passenger side has oil coming out of it i have checked and rechecked the oil level and have tried priming it 2-3 and still nothing. Its a stock 305 that i installed a new cam lifters and pushrods. o and i have turned the motor over by hand a few revolutions to c if that would help to and still nothing. Any ideas?

I had the same issue, but I just put my motor in anyways and I haven't had an issue. But thats probably not the answer you are looking for...

Turn the crank a bit (manually or by bumping the starter) then prime some more.  You should eventually get oil from all pushrods.  You shouldn't have to turn it too much.

Update: Oh, I just read your last sentence.  Well, what pressure are you getting when you prime it?

well i cant really check my oil pressure cause the motor is out of the truck. but the drill is really working when i prime it and on the driverside there is a constant stream of oil so my pump cant be at fault at least i dont think so and there was lots of oil pressure when i pulled the motor out. Also could it be that when i put the lifters in i didn't line the holes in the lifter up with the oil holes in the block just a crazy thought i had.

There is no need to install the lifters in any way other that "right-side-up."  They rotate during operation.

If I am not mistaken, the distributor shaft recieves its oiling from the passenger side oil gallery.  If your primer tool is just a plain shaft with no lower bushing, I don't think that gallery will pressurize.  Your priming tool should look like this: http://paceperformance.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=25140.  Not 100% on this since I have only ever used the style with the bushing.

That's why I asked about your oil pressure.  I wasn't suggesting that the pump was the culprit.

Yeah that won't do it. Use either a primer like above or pull all of the spark plugs out and crank it over with the dist in till you read good pressure. You'll be fine.
