Welding Protectant

What do you guys use to protect things when your welding?  Like welding overhead grab handle nuts in with interior components in still.  Also how would I protect the rubber seal around the big side window on my suburban while welding the seams smooth between roof and quarter panels?  last time i used and old U-haul blanket but it caught fire and has big holes in it now.

Anything is going to catch fire but you can use cardboard or like most plumbers and welders use asbestos sheet or even a shingle

Something like that, just weld the nut to a plate, drill a hole and bolt it in instead of welding to the body.

I have old shingles i never thought to use those, thanks.  what about protecting the rubber seal?  I was thinking of coting it in petroleum jelly and then welding,  i was thinking the jelly will burn instead of my seal and as long as i wipe it off before it burns down to the rubber i'll be ok.  Kinda like a sacrificial barrier, just don't know how fast it will burn.
