15x10 Cragars won't turn!
« on: May 31, 2010, 11:11:04 pm »
I have a '76 2wd 1/2 ton, and I put a set ot 15x10 Cragar SS's on the back. It is a non posi rear end. As soon as I torque the nuts down, the wheels won't turn ! They don't seem to be rubbing on anything like springs, shocks, etc, and because of the offset, there is less rim inside of the wheel wells than the stock rim! Any ideas where to look next? Do I need spacers? Thanks!

It's my daily driver. The stock wheels work no problem. When I loosen the lugs, it turns a bit, and it sounds like metal on metal, but I can't see any marks on the rim.

Pull the drum and look inside for rub marks.

The only thing I can think of (since you mentioned that there is less off-set on the new ones) would be that by the design of the wheel/drum, the spokes are touching the outer edge of the drum someway before the center & as you tighten the wheel down it bows the drum & pushes the it into the face of the backing plate?
This would do what your describing...just not sure why/how it is happening. Lorne

I think you would need a lot of pressure to change the shape of the drum.

79, can we get some pics??

The parking brake comment wasn't from me! It wasn't on. I haven't had a chance to check yet, it keeps pouring rain here. I am thinking it may be the way the spokes hit the drum and put pressure on it. I am going to pull the drums, check for rub marks, and try putting the wheels on without drums. I'm thinking a thin spacer should fix the problem if it is distorting the drum. Will let everyone know asap! Thanks for all suugestions!

i would think it has to do with the brakes don't think a rim will put that much presser on a drum to make it touch the back plate

If you remove the wheel and it is interfering you should see some evidence of it. A spacer may be all you need.
