What do you think of engine oil bypass filters?

I have been reading about these lately and think it would be a nice add to extend engine life. Just wanted to know what yall think.  Have you seen any that look cool?  Does anyone have one on a SBC?  If so, where did you mount it?  I have never seen one on a gas motor, just diesels.

I wouldn't waste my money on it. A Prelube system would be a better investment.

I am a pretty big fan of them. I have an Amsoil setup on my '76 Diesel and a Wix setup on my '85 Camaro w/305 engine. They are really designed for extended drain intervals, which I do on all my vehicles. It's a good idea on any vehicle but not a critical component I think. Great if you like to pamper your vehicle and get the maximum life from your oil and engine.

The Amsoil filters cost more but filter the most efficient. The Wix bypass filters out stuff mostly above 12 microns and the Amsoil most above 2 microns. Compare that to a full flow filter capturing most particles above about 20 microns.

Basically, it's supposed to filter out more particulate floating in the oil. Now if you think about it and particulate matter floating around in the oil gets pumped under pressure through your engine then a particulate filter catches what didn't get trapped in your oil filter or embedded in your bearings it may go through again.... Then again it may not....I've pulled enough engines apart to know that if you stick to a good routine schedule and avoid foreign matter from entering the engine it's hardly worth the $. Now if you had an engine you were running extended service intervals on and a very expensive engine or piece of equipment it may be a sound investment but if it's your daily driver, I find it hardly a worthy expense. This is just my opinion though, I'm not bashing it. I don't see any reason it could cause any harm.

Vile, wouldn't the extra quart or so in the system help it run cooler?

if you want a extra qt add a deeper oil pan. I'm with vile i don't see the benefit of this on dd trucks there hasn't been any problems with them just how they are the only reason gm used them on 88-98 trucks is cause of the front drive shaft being a driverside drop being in the way. if it aint broke dont fix it lol

The pre lube system is pretty cool also, a little more money though.  I dont think I will do either to my truck right now, as I am still running the  bone stock 350 in my 79.  It has 229k on it and is still going good. (knock on wood).  When it comes time to rebuild it I am going to put both systems on it. I want the next motor to last 30 years also.
